Character Design and Model Sheets
Rendered Character Lineup sheet of Monifa, Palinea, Gelly, and Manny. Monifa is a young, dark skinned black woman in her early 20's with vitiligo. She wears a blue button down collar shirt, green cargo shorts, a tool belt, two yellow gloves, googles on her head, and a pair of futuristic looking sneakers, along with holding a drill in her right hand and a hammer in her left. Palinea is a purple skinned mantis-like alien, donning a pomegranate crown and purple dress. Manny is a short, green alien with ant-like antennae, four eyes with bushy eyebrows, and a bushy handlebar mustache. He wears a black shirt and khaki shorts. Gelly is a light blue-teal slime alien with a cowlick at the top of his head and two big navy eyes.

Prop and Environment Design
Rough prop design sketches I made for an environmental design project. I used Palinea for the reference point, having her kingdom be themed around pomegranates and orchids. The items include a self portrait of Palinea, a ceremonial jug, an orchid shaped scepter, a bush in a special pot, a willow tree, cobblestone roads, a palanquin, a gem on a pillow, and a pomegranate crown with seed shaped gems bedazzling the middle.
Final lineart of the props for the environmental design project. Some did not see use in the final product of the environment concepts.
The first set of 6 out of 12 rough thumbnails for the location design project. The environments include: two different perspectives of a wood carved hallway with decorated chandeliers leading to a set of doors, Palinea standing in front of a wall adorned with paintings, Palinea's room, and two different perspectives of a temple adorned with pews, an altar, and stain glass windows.
The second set of 6 out of 12 rough thumbnails for the location design project. The environments include: Palinea on the cobblestone streets of her kingdom's city- now on fire- as a sword is in view in front of her; a swordsman, dressed in beetle like armour, hunting down Palinea as she hides behind the town square's giant willow tree, the kingdom in chaos and destruction; Palinea being paraded around in the streets, the people reaching out in awe and worship as balloons fly through the air; Palinea waving from a balcony to a roaring crows and balloons; the same shot but from the perspective of the crowd; and finally, a celebration in the town with people around stalls of food and drink.
Cleanup of the tight thumbnails for the location design project. I decided to go with the fisheye lens perspective of the temple, Palinea's room, the festival stalls, Palinea hiding from the swordsman, Palinea at the feet of the swordsman, and Palinea in front of the wall of paintings.
For the two final environment compositions, I went with the festival stalls and Palinea in front of the paintings, with these images being the layouts in progress. The one you're viewing is the festival outside of her family's palace. The stalls are all lined up with various food and drink, the cobblestone road lined with bags, stools, and baskets on the ground, leading to the entrance of the town where a big sign welcoming visitors can be seen. A winding road leading up to a hill where a giant palace sits can be seen in the distance, its center architecture in the shape of a pomegranate with two mushroom esque towers on either sides. Balloons fly from the palace into the sky.
For the two final environment compositions, I went with the festival stalls and Palinea in front of the paintings. The one you're viewing is the rough layout of Palinea staring at the wall of family paintings.

Rough Tonal explorations for the two chosen environments in greyscale. Each exploration is to view the environment in various lighting, including morning, afternoon, and night. For the exterior, it was a standard showcase of the hours of the day and night; for the interior, I got a little creative and included one where Palinea is holding a candle in the dead of night.

More proper light reflection and shadow was applied to both interior and exterior shots, with the interior lighting having window light reflections.
Set 1 of 12 Colour explorations for the two chosen environments. I decided to go with the morning tonals for the exterior composition and the night time tonals of Palinea holding a candle for the interior composition. Various colour schemes were considered, including one where Palinea was illuminated in a green light from a firefly lantern.
Set 2 of 12 Colour explorations for the two chosen environments. These are a continued exploration of various colour schemes for the environments, ultimately culiminating in me choosing an interior shot with Palinea illuminated in a bright pink glow from a lantern.
